Rarity symbols and labels

Pokémon prints a small symbol next to the card number that shows the card's rarity inside its set.

The Pokémon Company does not publish an official rarity chart that we could find, so this guide follows community references (Bulbapedia, Serebii, PkmnCards). Labels and symbols can change from set to set; check the card in your hand.

Classic symbols

  • ● Circle — Common: the most frequent.
  • ◆ Diamond — Uncommon: less frequent.
  • ★ Star — Rare: it may be holographic (Holo Rare), with a metallic effect on the artwork.

Modern labels (Scarlet & Violet era)

  • Double Rare: two black stars; this is where Pokémon ex appear.
  • Ultra Rare: two foil stars; full-art versions of Pokémon ex and some Supporters.
  • Illustration Rare: one gold star; an alternate full-art illustration of a Pokémon.
  • Special Illustration Rare: two gold stars; a more elaborate scene.
  • Hyper Rare: three gold stars, often called "gold cards".
  • ACE SPEC Rare: a pink star on ACE SPEC cards (you may have only one in a deck).

Later series add their own labels, such as Mega Hyper Rare in the Mega Evolution series. Hyper and Secret Rares are usually numbered beyond the set's printed total.

Holo and the rest

  • Holo: the artwork is shiny.
  • Reverse Holo: the frame and text are shiny while the artwork is normal. Many sets print reverse-holo versions of non-holo cards.

On CardzFolio we order these labels in the rarity index on an editorial scale from 1 to 9. This order is not a price.
